Olympic Stories

Just ahead of the opening ceremonies tomorrow, here are a couple of stories that are worth following this year:

Michael Phelps, an Olympic swimming legend after his record breaking performances in Beijing, is after even more records in this his final Olympic Games. Already the most decorated male athlete in Olympic history with 14 gold medals, including 9 individual gold medals, he has a chance, in his 7 events this year, to surpass soviet gymnast, Larisa Latynina, for both total and individual medal count.

Similarly, speed skater / cyclist, Clara Hughes, the only Olympian to have multiple medals in both Summer and Winter games, has a chance to become Canada's most decorated Olympian with a medal in either of her cycling events this year (which would break the record currently shared with speed skating teammate Cindy Klassen).

If you are interested in medal count predictions, the Canadian Press predicts 22 medals for Canada (and even tells you who will win them).

Or, if you're really into medals, find out who will win medals in every single event, courtesy of Sports Illustrated!

The opening ceremonies are being directed by Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire), and they are expected to be surprising and entertaining. Here's a story with a few details, if you don't mind spoiling some of the surprises.

Lastly, because it bugs me to have a post without photos, here is a shot of the Tower Bridge from last night (because I know you'll never get sick of bridge photos...)
