Canadian Bronze Rush

I didn't make it out to do any sight-seeing yesterday, as I've been trying to fight off a cold, and decided just to stay home and get a longer night's sleep (about 8 hours).  Instead, I'm just going to give you some Olympic news stories, interspersed with a few ad-hoc photos from my river cruise yesterday.  (And yes, this is another Bridge photo in disguise...)

Canada won three more medals on Tuesday (all bronze) for a total now of four bronze medals.  University friend, Tom Lee, called it a "Canadian Bronze Rush" on Facebook.

First, we had synchronized divers Meaghan Benfeito and Roseline Filion with their bronze in the 10m platform event.

Then it was Antoine Valois-Fortier with his bronze in the Men's 81kg Judo event.

And finally, Christine Girard won her bronze in the 63kg weightlifting event.

More good news for Canada:  Swimmer Brent Hayden has qualified for the men's 100m freestyle final, and the Women's Soccer team has survived the round-robin in their group to make the quarter-finals.  Christine Sinclair is the best Canadian soccer player ever, having scored 137 goals in 184 international matches.

In other Olympic news, American swimming legend Michael Plelps has become the most decorated Olympic athlete in history with his third medal of these games, giving him now 19 Olympic medals.  He won 8 medals in Athens 2004, including 6 gold, and then a stunning 8 gold medals, 7 in world record time, in Beijing 2008.

There was also a less than Olympian moment yesterday in women's badminton, where the world champion pair (and their opponents) appeared to be intentionally trying to lose a match.  Both teams had already qualified for the elimination round, but the loser would avoid having to play the 2nd ranked team until the final.  Both teams were roundly booed by the crowd.
